How do i train my little dog to be more protective?

I have a 3 year old silky terrier and he is the best dog ever he is very attentive and sweet. But he is to sweet, I think that if someone were to come and burglarize the house they might take him with them. So I just want to know how can I train him to be more protective. Not aggressive I don't want him to be mean.
