Im thinking about buying a leather sofa but have a cat, do cats scratch leather or stay off it?

she scrathes the stairs carpet and the odd other little place on the carpet, usually around closed doors, but hasnt been scrathing the upholstry, i just dont want to buy an expensive leather suite and she scratch it, she does tend to sleep alot on the top of the older one although it is soft and squishy fabric, thankyou for reading.
