If Jesus was always God, how could he die on the cross?

If there as always been this Holy Trinity, what difference does if make if Jesus died on the cross and was resurrected? If he died for our sins, why did he have to be so dramatic about it? And if he didn't really die anyway, what difference does it make what happened to him? No harm no foul, I always say!
